| IMPLEMENTATION OF AN EHS REVIEW/ APPROVAL PROCEDURE FOR NEW EQUIPMENT AND PROCESSES | This paper describes a procedure used by a large medical-device manufacturing firm to review and approve the environmental, health and safety (EHS) aspects of new equipment and processes before they are implemented in a production mode. The procedure has been implemented as part of new process/equipment documentation which is required in this industry by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although the FDA does not specifically require an EHS review, the company has included EHS review and approval as a good manufacturing practice. | Process Review.ppt |
| ISO 14001-Based Management Systems | ISO 14000 is currently only one of two international standards which address management systems, with the other being ISO 9000, for Quality Management Systems. As such, it is in the forefront of worldwide efforts to focus on improving the management of activities, in this case environmental management. This paper discusses the background and development of ISO 14000, including a review of why it was decided not to include health and safety within its original scope. | AIHA-ISO14001-Based Systems.ppt |
| AUDITING PROCESS SAFETY MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS | One of the requirements of OSHAs standard for Process Safety Management (PSM) is that "Employers shall certify that they have evaluated compliance with the provisions of this section at least every three years ". This paper describes the development and implementation of a computer-based audit program designed to assist in conducting the required evaluations. | Auditing PSM Systems.ppt |
| The Evolution of EHS Auditing from Regulatory Compliance to Continuous Improvement | This paper describes a process that refocuses traditional environmental, health and safety audits. Most audit tools used today are designed to identify findings of non-compliance with regulatory requirements. Such tools tend to be binary - they identify only two conditions: compliance or non-compliance. This design is reflective of the focus of audits toward identification of compliance issues and less toward how the organization can improve their performance in terms of risk reduction. | EHS Audit for Improvement.ppt |
| Understanding EHS Management System Development | As many organizations begin the process of developing management systems for Environmental, Health and Safety performance, there will be many questions raised by those who have responsibility for such systems. In some ways, the concept of "management systems" is difficult to clearly grasp, particularly for those who have been focused on the day-to-day tasks of ensuring compliance with a myriad of regulatory requirements. The following "question and answer" series can help in gaining a better understanding of EHS management systems, why they are important, and how they are developed. | Understanding EHS Mgmt System Development.ppt |
