One of the keys to more efficient and effective EHS Management today is the utilization of computerized data management systems to record, store, retrieve and analyze the ever-increasing amount of required data and documentation. In response to this need, we have seen a tremendous growth in the development of specialized EHS data management products in the last few years. These programs range from simple "scan and store" systems for Material Safety Data Sheets to highly sophisticated enterprise-wide systems which offer modules for almost all data management needs.

We believe that the most important step in selecting (or developing) a data management system should be taken before contacting a single vendor- determine what your needs are! It is only through this initial analysis that a good assessment of the available products can be made; and, it’s the only way you will be able to determine what compromises are acceptable and which are not.

Finally, carefully consider the administrative costs and resources needed to maintain the system for the long term- if you don’t have the administrative infrastructure to operate and maintain the system, the system will fail and the result may be worse than if there was no system in the first place.
